WHAT IS THE WINTER SOLSTICE?

The Winter Solstice is a roaming nocturnal art project and cross-disciplinary happening materialising in Oslo during the longest night of the year, initiated in 2012 by the artist Hanan Benammar and since 2015 by Vandaler forening*.

The event aims to gather the local audience around various practices of both emerging and established artists, offering a unique opportunity to experience art works through the night combined with performances, concerts, poetry readings, plays and even yoga sessions. The food and entrance are free.

Since 2012, the Winter Solstice has gathered over 130 artists and performers, attracting 200 to 300 people every year.  The event functions clearly as a space of project: as throwing something towards the future.

This event is inspired by the Annual Avant Garde Festival of New York, initiated in 1963 by the cellist and performance artist Charlotte Moorman, as well as pre-christian pagan traditions such as Yule and Modranicht, the very origins of Christmas.

Ann Rosén‘s sound art involves expanding the palette of sounds using her own self-built instruments. Glitches, sparks and clicks, white noise and electronic artefacts characterise Ann Rosén’s sound world, as do spatial soundscapes created using real-time synthesis. Many times there are visual elements of design, equipment and materials innovatively integrated into her performances. In recent years the composing – usually in combination with her self-made electronic musical instruments – has taken an increasingly large place in Ann’s oeuvre.

Sten-Olof Hellström is an electroacoustic music composer and performer. In 2013 Sten-Olof celebrated thirty years as a professional composer by obtaining a PhD in composition at University of Huddersfield, UK, with the thesis entitled ”Algorithmically-driven synthesis and feedback system: an investigation into the aesthetic and technical processes in my compositional practice ”. His music has been featured at concerts, festivals and radio-broadcasts all around the world. In recent years he has worked with a variety of compositional and musical projects such as ”Sound Excursions in the Stockholm Archipelago” where he together with Ann Rosen performed EAM concerts and workshops in Stockholms Archipelago using a sailboat as a base.
